Re-entry, rebuy and add-on tournaments
Re-entry lets an eliminated player register again for a fresh starting stack, usually during late registration. A rebuy lets you buy more chips without leaving your seat, often only when your stack is at or below the starting stack. An add-on is a one-time purchase of extra chips, usually at the end of the rebuy period.
How it works
Every re-entry, rebuy and add-on adds money to the prize pool, which is why these events often beat their guarantees. The tournament lobby shows the limits, such as "1RE" (one re-entry) or "R/A" (rebuy and add-on). Some sites cap re-entries per player.
A $20 re-entry event lets you enter up to 3 times. You bust twice early and win on your third bullet: your total cost is $60, not $20. Track that when you judge your results.
Strategy tips
- Decide your maximum bullets before you start and stick to it.
- The add-on is usually good value when it gives a lot of chips per dollar relative to your stack.
- Expect looser early play from opponents who plan to rebuy. Value-bet them more.
- Count your real cost (all bullets) when you review results.
- If you are on a short bankroll, prefer freezeouts or single re-entry events.
- Late registration plus re-entry means fields can grow a lot; check the final entry count.
Common mistakes
- Chasing losses by firing more bullets than planned
- Skipping a good-value add-on to "save money"
- Not knowing whether re-entry is allowed until after busting
