PLO, PLO5 and mixed games tournaments
Pot-Limit Omaha (PLO) deals four hole cards, and you must use exactly two of them plus three board cards. PLO5 deals five hole cards. Hi-Lo versions split the pot with the best low hand. Mixed games rotate between variants, such as H.O.R.S.E. or 8-game.
How it works
Pot-limit betting caps each bet at the size of the pot. Hands run much closer in equity than in hold'em, so draws are strong and nut hands matter. Mixed events switch games every orbit or level.
In PLO, A♠A♥7♣2♦ against J♠T♠9♥8♥ preflop is close to a coin flip, unlike aces in hold'em, which are big favorites against most hands.
Strategy tips
- Play hands that work together (connected, double-suited). Avoid four random cards.
- Draw to the nuts. Second-best flushes lose big pots in Omaha.
- Position matters even more, since pot-limit betting rewards acting last.
- In Hi-Lo, avoid getting quartered. Prefer hands that can scoop both halves.
- In mixed games, find your weakest variant and play tighter in it.
- Respect variance. Equities run closer, so swings are bigger.
Common mistakes
- Overvaluing aces without supporting cards
- Chasing non-nut draws
- Forgetting you must use exactly two hole cards
