Dramaha: Omaha plus draw
Dramaha is a hybrid of Omaha and draw poker. You get five hole cards. The pot is split between your best Omaha hand (exactly two hole cards plus three board cards) and the best five-card draw hand you can make from your own cards after a draw.
How it works
Players receive five hole cards and share community cards. Phenom's rules page says the draw comes after the flop betting round: you can discard and draw up to five cards, or stand pat. One half of the pot goes to the best Omaha high hand, and the other half to the best draw hand, which is judged by the version being played: ordinary high poker in Dramaha High, 2-7 lowball in Dramaha 2-7, or Badugi in the Badugi version. Because the same five hole cards play for both halves, a hand that is great for one half is often poor for the other. Some other write-ups describe a three-card cap on the draw, so check the lobby rules for the draw limit and exact street order, since rooms vary.
Rules and hand rankings
- Omaha half: normal high-hand rankings, using exactly two hole cards and three board cards.
- Dramaha High: the draw half is ranked as an ordinary five-card poker hand made from your hole cards after the draw.
- Dramaha 2-7: the draw half is a 2-7 lowball hand, where 7-5-4-3-2 is best and straights, flushes and pairs are bad.
- Badugi version: the draw half is a Badugi hand. Phenom's rules page describes it and lists DramaDugi in its Super Circus mix.
- Phenom's Circus mix includes Dramaha High and Dramaha 2-7. It also runs a separate Dramaha Mix event (PSOP I #41) whose rotation it does not publish.
Dramaha 2-7: you are dealt 7♠ 6♥ 4♦ 3♣ 2♠. This is a 7-6 low, which is a strong draw hand already, so you stand pat. The board is K♣ K♦ 5♠ 9♥ J♣. Your Omaha high is just a pair of kings (the board's two kings, one more board card and two of your hole cards), which anyone holding a king or better will beat, but a pat 7-6 low is very hard to beat in the draw half. You keep your strong made hand for that half instead of breaking it up to chase both.
Strategy tips
- Focus first on winning the half you can win, then see if you can freeroll the other. Five hole cards that make a strong draw hand often make a weak Omaha hand, and vice versa.
- Watch how many cards your opponents draw. A player who stands pat has a made draw hand, so you need to be sure about the Omaha half to continue.
- Hands that can win both halves are rare, so be selective and don't pay to see the board with hands that only work for one half.
- Don't ignore the Omaha rule. You must use exactly two hole cards there.
- Learn Omaha, 2-7 Triple Draw and Badugi separately before you try Dramaha.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting the draw hand uses all five of your cards, while the Omaha hand uses exactly two plus three board cards
- Drawing away a made Omaha hand
- Treating it like regular Omaha
- Playing it without knowing 2-7 hand rankings
